Project Information

Dr. Strange is one of the biggest projects shot in Nepal after the Hollywood movie Little Buddha which was shot in some of the places of Kathmandu Nepal. The production house was big and ground handling was challenging. It was December 2014 when a team from Marvel arrived in Nepal, with the team of Director Scott Derrickson, Producers Charles Newirth, Production Manager Jamie Lengyel, and others. Our founder Mr. Bhuwan Bharati was appointed to scout teams to different Locations of Kathmandu heritage sites and places by Ms. Carolyn Syangbo Nepal Production Manager. Bhuwan Bharati (Location Manager Neapl) took the team to Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Ashon Tole MangalBazar, New Road, Thamel, and other places in Kathmandu. Director Scott Derrickson and the Producers team like most of the places in Kathmandu. It is also said that the first decision to shoot the movie was in Tibet for” Karma Taj” due to the high budget and many restrictions to shoot movies.

They are having a problem so they decide to scout the location of Nepal due to the Structure and the Architecture of heritage sites in Kathmandu being similar to Tibet. When they arrived in Kathmandu they felt that the location was mixed with Buddhism and Hinduism. They felt that Kathmandu was the Best Location for “ Kamar Taj” and they decided to shoot the movie in Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Patan Durbar Square, Ashton Bazar, New Road, Thamel, and some alleys around Patan, Lalitpur area. In the same year April 2015, we had a big and massive earthquake in Nepal. Many locations that were scouted by the Marvel team were damaged. Again after the earthquake in June 2015, Production Manager Jamie Lengyel from the Marvel team came to Nepal to scout a location to perceive how much damage was done by the earthquake in the locations Among the locations they decided to shoot the movie Doctor Strange Boudhanath stupa pinnacle structure had been destroyed by the earthquake and remaining other locations are ok to shoot the movie.

Till the end of July 2015, they hadn’t decided to shoot the movie in Nepal. At the end of July, they had a meeting in Los Angeles with the team, and finally, the decision was made to shoot the movie in Pashupatinath temple, Patan Durbar Square. Ashton Bazar, New road, Thamel, some alleys of Patan, Lalitpur area and instead of Boudhanath Stupa they selected Swayambhunath stupa to shoot the movie because both stupa structures are same and both are Buddhist temples. Then they finalized a date in November 2015. A team of 32 crew from the Marvel team visited the Kathmandu Location. after the decision was made.

On that team, there were the Director, Camera Crew, Arts Department team, Gaffer team, Costume Team, and other teams needed for the grounding. They scout all the locations and finally, they decided to shoot a movie in the 2nd week of November. It was not easy to handle 300 foreign crew from Marvel and 200 Local crew from Nepal. At the same time, our neighboring country India strikes all the borders as we know that we are from a landlocked country. India’s roadway is the fastest and cheapest way for fuel and other things imported into Nepal. For 3 months there has been a shortage of fuel in the country due to the India trade route strike. We need 80 vehicles for shooting every day for every location. However, we are able to manage fuel for the vehicle. The director and art team needed 3000 extra people for the movie shooting from Kathmandu.

The job was difficult but we were able to find 3000 extra from different places in Kathmandu. Another big job was to find the Kamar Taj location around Kathmandu Valley but finally, the team found a place in Patan as a Kamar Taj. It was difficult to manage a location in Kathmandu with 500 crews 1500 Extra per day but we are able to manage all the location permits and logistical arrangements in every Location. There were many hitches and obstacles but we were able to manage all the shooting locations to shoot smoothly. We are all the team and it’s me Bhuwan Bharati Location Manager Nepal for Dr. Strange is proud to be a part of the Marvel Production Dr. Strange Movie crew. We are looking forward to working and organizing Logistical arrangements, Permits, Locations, and other related work for foreign filming production companies in the Future too.
